Bud Gillies
Bud Gillies is a well-known and broadly collected Winnipeg artist whose highly acclaimed work has been featured in solo shows and collections across Canada and United States. Bud’s works are one-of-a-kind vessels, tiles, iconic enclosures, oil paintings, and frescoes. In recent work, the female figure features prominently, while the paintings echo early modernism and give a subtle hint of biology in the manner of Joan Miro. His most recent show was in 2018 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, titled Vessels and Frescoes.
Bud represented Manitoba at the Canadian Clay and Glass Museum. He has participated in several shows at the Winnipeg Art Gallery including Contemporary Art in Manitoba, In Praise of Crafts/Louange aux Metiers d’Art, and Clay at the Crossroads: Direction sin Contemporary Studio Ceramics. The Winnipeg Art Gallery commissioned his art for their permanent collection and his work is also part of the collections of the Manitoba Government, Great-West Life, the City of Winnipeg, Charles Bronfman(Seagrams Distillery, Sony) Claridge collection in Montreal, and recently the Thompson Dorfman Sweatman law firm in the True North Building.
Over the years, Bud has taught various workshops and classes for the University of Manitoba School of Art, the Manitoba Craft Council, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Children’s Museum and has produced over 100 permanent ceramic tile murals in schools across Manitoba with the Artist in the School Program.
